6th February 2020 was the International Day of Zero Tolerance For Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). According to a tweet from the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 200 million women and girls alive today have suffered FGM in 30 countries as per the data they have.
What is FGM?
Female Genital Mutilation is the process of removing just a part of or the entire external female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
Practicing Female genital mutilation is violating the rights of young girls and women. The practice is a reflection of rampant gender inequality and discrimination of women in society.
FGM also violates the females’ right to good health, security, and the right to life in case the procedure results in death.
The four types of FGM are;
It involves removing a part of or the whole clitoral glans, which is a sensitive part of the women’s genital organs.
Clitoral glans play the role of providing sexual pleasure in women. This type of FGM involves two practices;
- Removal of the clitoral hood only (fold skin that covers the clitoral glans).
- Removal of both the clitoral glans and the clitoral hood.
It involves cutting the clitoral glans and the inner folds of the vulva (labia minora) without removing the outer folds of the vulva (labia majora).
This type of FGM comes in 3 categories;
- Cutting of the labia minora only.
- Partial or complete cutting of the clitoral glans and labia minora.
- Partial or complete cutting of the clitoral glans, labia minora and labia majora.
Type 3 (infibulation).
It involves covering the vaginal opening with a seal. The seal is made by cutting and repositioning the Labia Minora and Labia Majora.
I can imagine how inhuman it is and how the women undergoing this type of FGM feel. It is so painful and a very horrible experience.
This type of FGM comprises all harmful inhuman practices on female genital organs such as piercing, scraping, pricking, and incising for non-medical reasons.
To sum up, FGM has no health benefits and hurts females in many ways. It interferes with the natural functions of women’s’ body. It also involves damaging normal and healthy tissues of women’s genital organs whos risks vary according to the extent of tissue damage.
