4 Types Of FGM (#3 is inhuman).

6th February 2020 was the International Day of Zero Tolerance For Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). According to a tweet from the World Health Organization (WHO), at least 200 million women and girls alive today have suffered FGM in 30 countries as per the data they have.

A tweet from World Health Organization(WHO)

What is FGM?

Female Genital Mutilation is the process of removing just a part of or the entire external female genital organs for non-medical reasons.

Practicing Female genital mutilation is violating the rights of young girls and women. The practice is a reflection of rampant gender inequality and discrimination of women in society.

FGM also violates the females’ right to good health, security, and the right to life in case the procedure results in death.

FGM
Photo from News Agency.

The four types of FGM are;

Type 1.

It involves removing a part of or the whole clitoral glans, which is a sensitive part of the women’s genital organs.

Clitoral glans play the role of providing sexual pleasure in women. This type of FGM involves two practices;

  • Removal of the clitoral hood only (fold skin that covers the clitoral glans).
  • Removal of both the clitoral glans and the clitoral hood.

Type 2.

It involves cutting the clitoral glans and the inner folds of the vulva (labia minora) without removing the outer folds of the vulva (labia majora).

This type of FGM comes in 3 categories;

  • Cutting of the labia minora only.
  • Partial or complete cutting of the clitoral glans and labia minora.
  • Partial or complete cutting of the clitoral glans, labia minora and labia majora.

Type 3 (infibulation).

It involves covering the vaginal opening with a seal. The seal is made by cutting and repositioning the Labia Minora and Labia Majora.

I can imagine how inhuman it is and how the women undergoing this type of FGM feel. It is so painful and a very horrible experience.

Type 4.

This type of FGM comprises all harmful inhuman practices on female genital organs such as piercing, scraping, pricking, and incising for non-medical reasons.

To sum up, FGM has no health benefits and hurts females in many ways. It interferes with the natural functions of women’s’ body. It also involves damaging normal and healthy tissues of women’s genital organs whos risks vary according to the extent of tissue damage.

Oatmeal is best for your breakfast because a healthy breakfast triggers metabolism, regulates sugar levels, and gives you the energy to carry through the day.

Oatmeal rich in fibers is the best because it is satisfying and makes sure you don’t run into a muffin by mid-morning.

Go for natural oatmeal since the flavored ones might have a lot of sugar, which can be disastrous.

Avocados.

Avocado fruit contains approximately 20 grams of healthy mono-saturated fats that prevent the storage of flab around your lower belly.

Apart from controlling fat storage, healthy avocado fats also help the body absorb tetraterpenoids, which are cancer-fighting elements found in fruits and vegetables.

A study showed that people who ate avocado salads every time had a higher absorption rate of carotenoids.

Yogurt.

It feels terrible when you want to put on your favorite pants or take a full picture of yourself rather than just a selfie, but you cannot do it because of a protruded stomach.

Apart from a poor self-image and low self-esteem, a lot of fats around your belly causes diseases such as diabetes type 2 and heart problems. For tips on how to lose these fats read on to the end of this article.

Fats lie between the skin and the muscles. Therefore, the moment the layer of flab around your abdomen is more than one inch thick, you will have a potbelly, and the best way to burn these fats is to cut weight.

Here are some of the proven ways of burning fats around your abdomen for a flat tummy.

Causes and Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance: How To Balance Them.

When you are preparing food, and you add too much or too little of an ingredient, what happens? The final product is affected. Think of it that way for the case of hormone imbalance. In this article, I will be explaining the causes and symptoms of hormone imbalance. I will also be giving you tips on how to balance them.

Hormone imbalance is the situation whereby you have too much or too little of a hormone in your bloodstream.

A change in the level of hormone concentration in your body has side effects on body functions such as metabolism and overall growth and development of your body.

Causes of hormone imbalance.

Everybody experiences hormonal imbalance at some point in their life, but this also happens when the glands responsible for producing the hormones are not functioning correctly. Some medical conditions affect the productivity of the organs hence leading to fluctuations in hormone concentration. Therefore the side effects will depend on which hormone is affected.

Certain lifestyle habits and surrounding environment also cause hormone imbalance. The causes differ slightly in male and female.

In women, hormonal imbalance mostly relates to reproductive hormones. The causes are; menopause, breastfeeding, pregnancy, drugs like birth control pills, menstruation, ovary cancer and POI( primary ovarian insufficiency).

In men-The causes are; aging, puberty, prostate cancer and low testosterone.

Symptoms of hormone imbalance.

In men.In women
Reduced sex drivePainful, heavy, irregular or missed periods.

infertilityPain during sex
Hot flashesGaining weight or difficulties in losing weight
Tender breastsLosing of hair
Erectile dysfunctionUterine bleeding but not menstrual cycle
Low concentrationDeepening of voice
Low hair growth and reduced beardsInfertility
Low sperm countDarkening of the skin
Growth of breast tissuesVaginal atrophy
Table showing some of the symptoms of hormone imbalance in males and females.

Treatment of hormone imbalance.

Like any other disorder, hormone imbalance also has control. However, the treatment varies from person to person, and this depends on the causative agents of the disorder.

Here are some of the treatment options;

  • Vaginal estrogen-vaginal dryness leads to pain during sex, and you can regulate this by applying an estrogen cream to the vaginal tissues or use an estrogen tablet.
  • Hormonal birth control-when you are experiencing difficulties in getting pregnant you can use hormonal birth control to regulate the menstrual cycles. They include; Vaginal ring, birth control pills and birth control patch.
  • Those having PCOS problems can use In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to get pregnant.
  • The medication of testosterone-adolescents experiencing delayed puberty can use testosterone supplements to initiate puberty. It comes in gels and patches. Testosterone supplements also solve the problem of low sperm count in adults.
  • Thyroid hormone treatment-The synthetic thyroid hormone levothyroxine can cause the hormonal balance in people with hypothyroidism.
  • Metformin-It is used to regulate diabetes type 2. It lowers androgen levels and initiates ovulation.
  • Anti-androgen therapy-It is a male sex hormone but also found in women. Women with high levels of anti-androgen can go for medication to reduce its effects such as the growth of hair in the face and acne.

Don’t be worried a lot when you notice you have a hormone imbalance because just like any other disorder, it has treatment.

Observe the above symptoms, and if you notice any of them, don’t hesitate to visit a doctor for guidance on the effective treatment plan that works for you.

Hormones versus Behavior: How They Influence Each Other.

Have you ever wondered how your body responds automatically to situations such as aggression? The response is as a result of the interaction between hormones and behavior. In this article, I will be providing an overview of the relationship between hormones and behavior.

As much as you can learn and acquire new behaviors, they are also affected by hormones. Hormone concentration, on the other hand, is sometimes also influenced by actions. The interaction between the two is called behavioral endocrinology.

Hormones are chemical agents that travel in the blood to the nervous system to regulate the way someone acts in situations such as mating and anxiety. Specialized glands called endocrine glands secrete these hormones. Hormones that are in charge of the physiological processes influence the behaviors linked to these processes.

Hormones change the expression of genes, then influence behavior by increasing the probability that specific reactions occur under the control of a precise catalyst. Hormones achieve this by controlling an individual’s central integrator, sensory system, and peripheral effector.

There are four categories of hormones, but a single endocrine gland secretes only one type. These categories are; peptides or proteins, steroids, monoamines, and lipid-related hormones, each causing specific responses under different circumstances..

The above types of hormones are not similar. They differ in various useful features such as their mode of release, how they move in blood, location of their target tissue receptors, and the way of interaction, which leads to biological response.

Major hormones that influence behavior.

Peptide and protein hormones.

  1. Vasopressin-secreted by the pituitary glands. Collaborates with the kidney to increase water re-absorption hence reducing water loss from the body. It also narrows the blood vessels to increase blood pressure.
  2. Oxytocin– secreted into the blood by the posterior pituitary glands. Responsible for the contraction of the uterus during childbirth. It is also essential in other human behaviors such as sexual arousal, anxiety, and bonding.
  3. Prolactin-It is responsible for milk production during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  4. Thyroxine-Produced by the thyroid gland. It is responsible for controlling metabolic rate, brain development, bone maintenance, and muscle control.

Steroid hormones.

  1. Estradiol-Is a female sex hormone that treats symptoms of menopause, virginal changes, and bone loss in menopausal women.
  2. Testosterone-Secreted by the testicles and is responsible for sperm production. It is also responsible for sex drive in men.
  3. Cortisol– It is responsible for controlling processes of metabolism and the immune response. It also plays the role of managing stress.

How hormones influence behavior.

Three interactive components make up the system of behavior. These components are; the central nervous system, sensory system, and effectors, e.g., muscles.

The hormones colonize these components such that they can draw out a precise response in a given social situation under the influence of specific stimuli. For example, testosterone and estradiol hormones are responsible for gamete maturation but also promote mating behavior.

How behavior influence hormones.

The behavior resulting from the body response to a certain stimuli affects hormone concentration. For example, in a competition, testosterone level increases in winners and decreases in losers.

Therefore, the response of the body in a particular situation is as a result of interaction between hormones and behavior.
